LEVEL UP YOUR CLINIC

Your new laser technician's first 90 days

The right start turns a good hire into a great member of your team. Here is a simple plan you can adapt to your clinic and your new starter's experience.

Before day one

  • Check you have copies of their qualifications and certificates.
  • Ask your Laser Protection Supervisor or Laser Protection Adviser how they should be authorised under your local rules.
  • Decide who will mentor them, and put time in the diary for it.
  • Enrol them on their first courses, so they can start learning straight away.

Weeks 1 and 2: learn how you do things

Let them settle in before they treat. Take them through your local rules, treatment protocols and paperwork, and let them shadow consultations and treatments. Show them your standards for records, hygiene and client care.

Courses to book: Fitzpatrick in Practice and Consultation and Contra-indications.

Weeks 3 to 6: supervised practice

Once they are authorised, let them lead consultations and patch tests while you watch. Move on to treatments only when you are both comfortable, starting with straightforward clients. Check their records as well as their technique, and talk through each session afterwards.

Courses to book: Patch Testing Done Properly and Contra-actions and Adverse Reactions.

Weeks 7 to 12: build confidence

Step back gradually. Introduce a wider range of clients as they show they are ready, and keep regular check-ins so that questions come to you early. Make sure they know exactly what to do if something goes wrong, and who to call.

Courses to book: Parameters and Settings and Skin Types IV to VI Safely.

Your 90-day review

Sit down together and look at what went well, where they want to grow and which courses come next. Keep their certificates in your training records, and agree a plan for the next stage. See the essential courses for every role for ideas.

This is a general guide. Always follow your own local rules and treatment protocols, and adapt the timings to the person.
